What is Tarot?

Tarot is an ancient form of divination known as cartomancy, with roots tracing back to Renaissance Italy. Originally created as a card game, Tarot has evolved into a powerful spiritual tool with rich archetypal symbolism that mirrors the soul’s journey. The cards offer a reflection of our choices, patterns, challenges, and opportunities.
While Tarot can sometimes be used to glimpse future possibilities, its true power lies in helping us connect with Spirit and our intuition, tapping into the wisdom within. A Tarot reading provides clarity, insight, and perspective, helping us move through life with greater intention and trust. In many ways, the Tarot is a mirror for the soul, illuminating what’s ready to be seen and guiding us back to our own inner knowing.

How does Tarot work? Do the cards predict the future?

Not exactly. Tarot doesn’t set your future in stone. Instead, it reveals patterns, possibilities, and potential choices based on your current path. Think of it like spiritual GPS: it shows you where you are, where you’re headed, and how to make conscious choices along the way. A common misconception is that Tarot must be either predictive or psychological – when in truth, it’s both. It offers a mirror to your inner world, helping you see possibilities, realign, and make empowered decisions.

Is Tarot a religious or spiritual practice?

Tarot isn’t tied to any specific religion. While some people approach it spiritually, others view it more as a psychological or intuitive tool. My personal style blends intuitive insight with grounded guidance, and I always honor your beliefs and boundaries.

What’s the difference between Tarot and oracle cards? What’s the difference between Tarot and oracle cards?

Great question! Tarot has a specific structure: 78 cards divided into Major and Minor Arcana. Oracle cards, on the other hand, are more freeform—there’s no set number or structure, and the meanings can vary widely. I love both, but I believe Tarot gives us a deeper, more nuanced narrative.

Can anyone get a Tarot reading, or is it only for certain people?Tarot?

Absolutely, anyone can benefit from a Tarot reading! Whether you’re brand new to Tarot or a seasoned practitioner, the cards speak to all kinds of people. My clients come from all walks of life—if you’re open to reflection and insight, you’re in the right place. What’s in a standard Tarot deck?

A standard Tarot deck has 78 cards divided into two main sections: The Major Arcana and the Minor Arcana.

The 22 Major Arcana represent the big life themes and soul lessons we experience along our journey. These cards tend to mark significant turning points or spiritual insights. (representing the big life themes) and 56 Minor Arcana (the day-to-day stuff).

The remaining 56 cards make up the Minor Arcana, which focuses on the everyday moments, emotions, and decisions that shape our lives. The Minor Arcana is divided into four suits—Swords, Wands, Cups, and Pentacles—each corresponding to different enegies of the human experience: the intellect, action, the heart, and the material world, respectively.

Each suit contains ten numbered cards (Ace through Ten) and four Court CardsPage, Knight, Queen, and King. These Court Cards often represent people, personality traits, or stages of development. They add depth to a reading, offering insight into how we’re showing up—or who may be showing up—in a given situation.

Together, the 78 cards form a complete symbolic system, offering guidance, reflection, and insight.

How many cards are in a Tarot reading?

It depends on the type of reading. I might pull three cards for a quick check-in or a full ten-card spread for deeper insight. Sometimes the cards guide me to pull clarifiers, too. The number of cards isn’t as important as the clarity and depth they offer. Even a one-card reading may be packed with information!

Do the images and symbols really matter?

Yes—deeply. Tarot’s rich imagery and symbolism speak to your subconscious. The colors, images, and details all contribute to the message. I read intuitively and traditionally, so I blend what the imagery says with what I feel and sense.

Why do some cards seem “scary,” like Death or The Tower?

Ah, the so-called “scary” cards! They often get a bad rap, but they’re actually about transformation and truth. Death isn’t about literal death—it’s about endings that lead to new beginnings. The Tower shakes things up, yes, but often in ways that clear the path for growth. I always help you see these cards in empowering ways. For a more in-depth look at these cards, check out my Blog on “Scary Cards.”

What can I expect during a reading with you?

Expect a warm, intuitive, and judgment-free experience. I create a safe space where we explore your questions together. I’ll share what I see in the cards, offer practical insight, and give you space to ask questions or go deeper.

Can Tarot help with love, career, or life decisions?

Definitely. Tarot is especially helpful when you’re feeling stuck or uncertain. Whether it’s love, work, purpose, or healing, the cards offer clarity, perspective, and empowerment—not “answers,” but guidance to help you find your own.

How often should I get a Tarot reading?

It’s personal. Some clients come monthly, some just a few times a year. I believe in giving you tools, not creating dependency—so I’ll always support your sovereignty while offering the insight you need.

Do I need to prepare anything beforehand?

Not really—just come with an open heart and a question or area of focus if you have one. If not, the cards usually know what needs to be said. A little journaling beforehand can help, but it’s not required.

How long is a typical session?

My sessions range from quick check-ins to full deep dives. Most readings are 30 or 45 minutes, depending on your needs. I also offer custom readings and packages if you’re looking for more ongoing support.

Are online readings just as effective as in-person ones?

Yes, energy knows no distance. I’ve done powerful readings over Zoom and phone that are just as connective and accurate as in-person. I hold sacred space wherever and however we meet.

Can you do readings for events or groups?

Absolutely! I love bringing Tarot to parties, retreats, and gatherings. It adds a touch of magick and depth to any event. Just reach out and we’ll create something aligned with your celebration.

What is a Tarot Spread?

A Tarot spread is a group of cards laid out in a specific pattern, each position representing a part of the story or question being explored. Spreads can be as simple as a one-card draw or as layered as a ten-card reading with multiple lines of meaning and connection.

When you’re just starting out, it’s best to begin with smaller spreads—like Past-Present-Future or Situation-Action-Outcome. These help you get comfortable with the flow of a reading and how the cards influence one another.

Once you’re more confident, you can explore more complex layouts like the Celtic Cross or the Tree of Life, which use 7 to 10 cards. But keep in mind—more doesn’t always mean deeper insight. A well-constructed spread that’s aligned with your question will give you clearer answers than just pulling a lot of cards.

I often say that anything over 15 cards starts to feel overwhelming and unnecessary—except in special cases like my End-of-Year Spread, which uses more cards to reflect each month and season of the coming year.

What kinds of questions can I ask the Tarot?

Most of the questions I receive in readings tend to revolve around the major areas where we look for clarity and direction: love, work, career, and family. The key to a powerful Tarot reading is how you ask your question. Rather than looking for simple yes-or-no answers, aim to ask open-ended questions that invite insight, reflection, and guidance.

For example, instead of asking “Will John ever propose to me?” (which limits the Tarot’s ability to show the full picture), try asking “What do I need to know about my relationship with John?” or “What energy is influencing my romantic future?” These kinds of questions allow the cards to speak more deeply and meaningfully, revealing patterns, potential outcomes, and your role in shaping the path ahead.

Tarot is a conversation with your higher self—it works best when your questions come from a place of curiosity and openness rather than control or certainty. Think of it as asking why, how, or what’s next, instead of when or if.

I’m curious—can anyone learn to read Tarot?

Yes, yes, yes! Tarot is for everyone. You don’t have to be psychic or “special.” If you feel drawn to the cards, that’s your intuition saying it’s time. I picked up my first deck as a teenager and spent years in self-study, formal training, and practical experience. Anyone can learn Tarot with time, practice, and an open heart.

How do I choose the right deck for me?one learn to read Tarot?

Let your intuition guide you. Notice which decks you’re drawn to—imagery, colors, themes. If one gives you a “yes” feeling, trust that. And yes, it’s totally okay to buy your own deck (that old myth isn’t true!).

Is it okay to read Tarot for myself?

Absolutely. In fact, self-readings can be a great form of self-care. It’s a way to connect with your inner guidance and reflect on your path. Just remember to be kind to yourself, especially with tricky cards.

What’s the best deck for beginners?

I always recommend starting with the Rider-Waite-Smith deck—it’s the most widely used and has rich, easy-to-read imagery. Once you get the basics down, you can explore other styles and decks that call you.

Do I need to memorize all the meanings?

Nope. It’s helpful to learn the core meanings, but your intuition is just as important—sometimes more so. Over time, you’ll naturally build your own relationship with the cards, one that blends knowledge and feeling.

What’s the difference between intuition and memorization?

Memorization is about learning the traditional meanings. Intuition is about listening to the story the cards are telling you in the moment. When the two work together, that’s when the magick really happens.

Are there classes or resources you recommend?

Yes! I offer Tarot courses that walk you through everything—from card meanings to spreads to developing your intuition. Reach out to me if you are interested! As as great place to start, I also recommend “Seventy-Eight Degrees of Wisdom” by Rachel Pollack for a thoughtful, deep dive into Tarot’s wisdom.

Is Tarot evil or dangerous?

Not at all. Tarot is a tool—like a mirror. It reflects what’s already within you. There’s nothing evil about seeking clarity, healing, or connection. In my practice, I work only with light, integrity, and respect for your energy.

Can Tarot tell me exactly what will happen?

Tarot doesn’t predict fixed outcomes. It shows you the energies at play and the direction things are headed. It empowers you to make choices that align with your best path, rather than handing you a script for the future

What if I get a “bad” card?

There are no bad cards—only misunderstood ones. Even the most challenging cards have wisdom to offer. I help you interpret them in ways that feel empowering and constructive, not fearful.

Can Tarot tell me when something will happen?

A: Great question! Tarot isn’t a crystal ball—it doesn’t give fixed dates or exact timelines. What it can do is offer insight into what’s most likely to unfold based on your current energy and circumstances. Sometimes it points to timing cues (like seasons, pace, or stages), but it’s more about possibilities than certainties.

Remember, Tarot is a snapshot of the present moment. We always have free will—and that’s the magic of it. The cards help you make informed, empowered choices that can shape your path forward.

Do I have to believe in magick for Tarot to work?

Nope! Just come with an open mind and heart. Whether you believe in energy, psychology, or just need a new perspective, the cards have something to offer you. You don’t need to label it—just experience it.

Can Tarot connect me to spirit guides or the Akashic Records?

Yes, if you’re open to it. I often use Tarot as a bridge to deeper spiritual guidance, and in some sessions, I work with the Akashic Records for even more expansive insight. Each session is tailored to your comfort level and needs.

Do reversed cards always mean something negative?

Not at all! Reversals often indicate inward focus, delays, or areas needing attention. Sometimes they simply indicate that the energy of that card is diminished.
